Enthusiastic Bidding at the Club Auction

The club auction was held at the 15th November club evening. Auctioneer, Brian McGrath, kept up a brisk pace to get through the 59 lots that were on offer. This was about half the number compared with previous auctions but, without exception, the quality of the lots was very high. As well as club lots, three members submitted their stamps for the auction.

The hottest item was a Prussia Scott 3 VF MH that went for well above its asking price of $7.00.

The auction grossed close to $280. The club’s takings (club lots plus the commissions on the members’ lots) came to about $115.

All members are invited to submit items for the club auctions. This is a good way to turn those duplicates and unwanted stamps into cash … which you can use to buy more stamps! You can set your own minimum bid and the club only takes a 10% commission.

Highlights of Recent Club Evenings

October 11: Israel - Abe Margolis
Abe is a long time member, and an eclectic collector.

October 18: China - Gerry Miller
Gerry is best known for his interest in Philippines stamps, but he has a good depth of knowledge in other areas including China.

October 25: Lithuanian Air Mails - Ron Zacks
Ron gave an amusing presentation on his Lithuanian airmails which was well received.

November 1: Bagpipes on Stamps - Campbell Buchanan
Campbell showed a variety of different bagpipes on stamps from all over the world. He finished with a rendition of “Scotland the Brave” on the Scottish small pipes.

November 8: Cut Squares - Roger Lambert
Roger was originally in the program to present his Canadian stamps, but he has sold his collection. Instead he showed a comprehensive collection of US cut squares. He is currently building a collection of entires.

Welcome to Three New Members

It is a pleasure to welcome three new members to our fold.

Glenn Williams from Hamden has recently retired and has more time to spend on his stamp collection. His main collecting interests are USA and Israel. He has other commitments on Tuesdays, but hopes to make at least one meeting a month.

Harvey Willard is from Danielson, CT and has a strong interest in USA stamps. He decided to join after much arm twisting by Roger Lambert at the 4th Sunday Show.

Lucas Hernandez is an attorney from Milford and is fluent in Russian. Needless to say, he collects Russian stamps.

October “Postmaster” Went Far and Wide

Some members may have received two copies of the last issue of our newsletter. This was because we made an extensive mailing to our 4th Sunday Show address list in order to get more people interested in our club. We received many positive comments, and some members of neighboring societies have shown an interest to attend some of our club evenings. We are trying to update our address list of members. If anyone knows of inactive former members or their family members who would to keep abreast of club activities then please pass their name and address to the editor so that they can be added to the newsletter address list.

New Haven “Postmaster” on eBay for $300!

For a mere $300 you too can own a genuine reprint of a New Haven “Postmaster Provisional” cover. This item is currently on sales by dealer, William Langs. Do any members know the history of these reprints? Presumably the imprint was made by the original die before it was defaced. Langs claims that 130 covers were made using blue ink.

Postscript (with apologies to blondes) …

A blonde quickly went out to her mail box, looked in it, closed the door of the box, and went back in the house. A few minutes later she repeated this process by checking her mail again.

She did this five more times, and her neighbor who was watching her commented, "You must be expecting a very important letter today the way you keep looking into that mail box."

The blonde answered, "No, I am working on my computer, and it keeps telling me that I have mail."
